Did you know?

Did you know….?

that a computer can get run over by a car and despite being crushed, {somehow} have all its insides survive?

computer_run over

fixed computerReunited and it feels so good.

But that the Apple store doesn’t actually cover “destruction by car” so will kindly charge you a small fee of $800 to fix it?

Did you know… that it is physically impossible to stop eating these Skor Bars once you start?

And that I made these cookies for BeckyLizzy, but actually only allowed them to have one each so that I could eat the rest like they are my last meal on this earth.

Did you know… that we finally have a team name for the Nuun Hood to Coast Relay?

After-Nuun Delight: We do it morning, nuun, and night. {…running, that is}

(oh ha ha aren’t we punny.)

And that I’m going to be on a team with some pretty amazing women?? You should probably check out their blogs:

Did you know… that I’m not actually training for the National Marathon, like my Training Page says? (Or training to run a sub-3:20 marathon like myDailymile page states.)

But that I haven’t actually finished making my new marathon training schedule yet?

(Did you know that it is possible to be lazy and still train for a marathon?)

Did you know… that I find it encouraging that a lot of runners can relate to my thoughts about how running can suck sometimes? I mean, I’m not excited that running can be awful for other people too, but it’s good to know that you’re not alone.

Did you know… that my sister started a blog?! And it’s not about running {gasp!}. I don’t know how anyone finds things to write about if not running, but if you appreciate my sarcastic sense of humor, then I know you’ll love her’s too.

And yes, I know that I just wasted 3 minutes of your day reading this post. And that’s a 3 minutes you’ll never get back. But I’m a blogger – isn’t that sort of what I’m supposed to do? (Obviously I’m kidding {mostly}, but sometimes a blogger just has to give you random updates!)

Finally, a quick poll. Just for the fun of it.

Giveaway Winner!

Thank you all for entering my giveaway! I honestly wish I could spread the nut butter love around and give you all Vermont PB. Someday when I’m a big shot and sponsored for running races all over the country (hah), I promise there will be free nut butter for all HOTR readers. But until that day, sadly there can only be one winner.

So without further ado, the winner of the two jars of Vermont Peanut Butter is…..

Number 62, Leah!

Leah, please email your address to lauren@healthontherun.net and I will get the Good Karma and Cinnamon Raisin nut butters out to you ASAP! For the rest of you, if you’re dying to try some Vermont Peanut Butter, don’t despair – it is available to order online.

HOTR Puppy Cake

Regular posting will resume tomorrow. But for now…

The HOTR-family Puppy Cake recipe is a long-standing tradition that actually started back with this little girl — our first boxer, Chloe Kath-a-leen (pronounced with an emphasis, of course ;) ). Every year, we’d make her a very special cake to celebrate her birthday, and she’d go crazy for it every time.

Chloe.jpg

Although Chloe isn’t with us any longer, I’m happy to be able to carry on the tradition with my own pup.

And okay, so I admit I may have (unintentionally) misled you. Calling it a “cake” may be stretching it just a bit. But I assure you, dogs will eat this right up all the same!

The “recipe” is extremely simple. All I did was take about 1 cup of his normal food (I feed him Life’s Abundance, which I love because it contains no by-products) and mix it with a spoonful of natural peanut butter and nice big dollop of plain Greek yogurt.

If I had left it at that, it probably wouldn’t have been too unhealthy. But, I’m a firm believer that birthdays call for something extra special. So I “frosted” it with more whipped cream than a dog should probably eat in an entire year.

Koli cake_2

Yes I know, he’s spoiled. But he’s also incredibly skinny, so I figured a little extra fat couldn’t hurt. Plus, how can I say no to this face?

DSCN1801.JPGI made sure to dress up for the occasion ;)

I’ll spare you from the 6:00 minute video I made of the event, which includes my warbling rendition of “Happy Birthday” and him devouring the cake in one minute flat…then proceeding to lick the floor for the next five.

DSCN1807.JPG

But I think it’s safe to say he loved it. And I’m pretty sure your dog would too!

So there you have it — The “secret” HOTR Family Puppy Cake recipe. Totally worth waiting a whole year for. ;)

Okay, I promise — this is the last time this blog will be in puppy-overload. Back to normal tomorrow

A Very Special Birthday

We interrupt our regular posting schedule for a very special announcement:

Today is my baby’s 1st Birthday!

I can’t believe how fast the time has gone by. And how quickly he’s grown from this:

To this:

When Koli came into my life, I actually hadn’t been looking for a puppy. I’d wanted a dog of my own forever, but always thought I’d adopt an older dog (Boxer, of course!) for my first one. However, once I found out that a family member’s Boxer had a litter of puppies, I just knew I had to have one of my own.

Koli_5 wks 3.jpg

And although having a puppy has been a lot of work (and at times, very stressful), I wouldn’t change it for the world. This little guy is my buddy. I’ve loved watching him grow over this past year, and am excited for many more adventures together in years to come.

So today, in honor of my little man’s birthday, I will overload you with puppy pictures. And then I’m going to go make him a “cake” — complete with kibble, peanut butter, plain yogurt, and whippin’ cream. :)

Confessions of a {Vegetarian} Long Distance Runner

I’ve been blogging for a little while now, and although I wouldn’t consider myself a seasoned blogger yet, I figure it’s time to come clean about a few things. So without further ado, here are my confessions…

I didn’t start running because I was some active, super energetic kid. Nope — I started running because I was bribed.

Maybe I’ll tell you more about that another time. But for now, let’s just say that if I had had my way, I would’ve spent my entire childhood curled up in a chair reading, writing little poems, and singing songs to myself all day.

LB_crate.jpgWhat can I say? I was a unique child.

Running made me less socially awkward.

This might not come as a surprise given the above statement, even though you and I both know that high school cross country teams aren’t exactly known for their “coolness.” But I never claimed that running cross country made me cool, did I? It just made me actually social.

Most (ok, all!) of my socks have holes in the toes.

LB socks holes

What can I say…I have long toes…? And I rarely bother with dress socks, either. I probably own 2 pairs of them (which I never wear). Why put on a pair of nice socks when I’m only going to have to change them later to go for a run? Function over fashion here people.

I am a carbohydrate addict. I run to fuel the carb-addiction, and not the other way around.

My dog is obsessed with ice cubes. Only, he thinks they’re called coffee.

Koli ice cube

Why? You might ask. Well — because I don’t want to be the only one in this house addicted to the stuff, that’s why! Basically the pup realized his obsession for ice over the summer when I was making iced coffee in the morning. Every time he’d hear me preparing coffee in the kitchen, he’d leap up from whatever he was doing and come charging in, hoping a piece of ice would drop so he could snatch it up. As soon as I noticed this, I started asking him, “Do you need your coffee??” and now he comes to get ice whenever I ask. I’ll admit I get a kick out of the fact that some days, coffee is the only thing that gets him out of bed. (You and me both, little buddy).

Koli

I am obsessed with Peanut Butter Puffins.

peanut butter puffins

I eat them by the handful. And even though they never actually make it into a bowl of cereal, I continue to buy more every time I go to the store (I’m also obsessed with shirts that have thumbholes).

I never run with the treadmill on an incline.

I know, I know. It’s totally not legit to keep the incline at 0.0. But I don’t care. I’m morally against raising that incline….or really I’m just stubborn. I tell myself that I don’t run on a treadmill enough for this to make a difference. And I almost believe it.

I don’t consider myself an expert at many things, but I am an expert carrot cake baker.

DSCN1752.JPG

I realize this is a bold statement. But not only is carrot cake the only non-chocolate dessert in my Top 5 Favorite Desserts list (yes, this list exists), but I also have a father and a boyfriend who both say it’s their favorite type of cake of all time. So I’ve had lots of practice, and I like to think I’ve perfected it by this point in my life. I like my own carrot cake so much, in fact, that I rarely (if ever) order it at a restaurant. Because chances are it won’t be as good. Sorry, but it’s true.

That being said, I can’t give people something I’ve baked without trying it first.

It doesn’t matter if I’ve made something 1 or 100 times. Baked goods must be tested before giving them away! What if something unexpected happened? This is easy to do with cookies or brownies (cut them up into pieces before serving) or even cupcakes. But it gets a little tricky when you start talking about cakes. Fortunately, I’ve found an indiscreet way to try the cake — just take a little piece out of the bottom of the 2nd layer. No one will be the wiser when it’s on top of a layer of frosting! Now if only I could find a way to do this with pie…

DSCN1697.JPG

I am not an expert home decorator.

I have good intentions, but I never get very far. Exhibit A: How Lauren Hangs a Picture

DSCN1732.JPG

That picture has been sitting there for months, waiting for me to buy more nails so I can hang it. But who am I kidding? It’ll be there till the day I move out.

Showers are optional on days I don’t exercise.

Now this is where my parents jump in to tell you that in high school I was known to come home from practice, eat dinner, do my homework, and go to bed…without showering (why waste the time when I’d have to do it again a few hours later??). But don’t worry Jen, I didn’t hang out in my sweaty running clothes all night. I left those in my gym locker for practice the next day.

When I run, I listen to songs that have words in them that I would never say out loud.

But maybe, just maybe, I say them in my head…

Ok, so now it’s your turn. Is there anything you need to get off your chest? Share it below!
