The Anatomy Scan and it’s a….!

On Monday morning, Evan and I went in for our anatomy scan. This was something I had been looking forward to (and admittedly a little nervous about) for a long time. Although I couldn’t wait to see how much Cheese Baby had grown since 11.5 weeks, I was also anxious to hear that he/she was healthy. This is the scan where they look at everything — the heart, the organs, the umbilical cord, the size of the head/belly, etc — to make sure that growth and development are on track and things look normal. Although I had no reason to believe that baby wouldn’t look good, you just never know what they might find. Our biggest hope from that appointment was that we’d leave with a clean bill of health.
Fortunately, everything seems great. The tech didn’t mention any warning signs during the appointment, and later in the day the doctor called to give us the assurance we needed (our appointment with her isn’t until next week): Baby is doing well and growing strong!
The other exciting part of the day? Finding out the baby’s sex. As I mentioned on Wednesday, this was something that we knew we wanted from day one. We just hoped that Cheese Baby would be on the same page.
Going into the appointment, all signs pointed to us having a boy. I didn’t have awful morning sickness, I craved salty foods (and cheese!) instead of sweet, I’m carrying straight out in front (vs on the sides), and the heart rate, though higher during a couple of the appointments, has tended to fall on the lower end or right in the middle of the normal range (they say that a higher heart rate means girl).
My entire family and many friends guessed boy too (as did many of you!). And early on in pregnancy, I was also pretty convinced.
But lately I was beginning to have my doubts. During runs (a time when I feel closest to Cheese Baby), I just kept picturing a little girl. I’d talk to her and imagine the two of us girls running together. I tried to just dismiss it as my girl bias — I come from a family of all girls, my sister just had a girl, the only baby on Evan’s side of the family is a little girl, and everyone in Evan’s family had a girl first, then a boy. We are literally surrounded by them.
And so the doubt persisted, despite all the traditional signs saying otherwise.
I think you can see where this is going…
For the first of what I’m sure will be many times in her life, Cheese Baby showed us that we most certainly don’t know everything.
Yep, we’re having a little Cheese Baby Girl!! And I’m so incredibly excited.
It’s funny because of course everyone says, “I would be happy either way!” I’ve said the same for the past 20 weeks and still believe it to be true, but….once we found out that we were having a little girl, I just lost it. It felt so right. And I truly can’t wait to meet her in December.
After that appointment, I think a switch flipped on in my brain. I’ve fallen into the vortex of baby registries and research. Looking for cribs, cloth diapers, monitors, blankets, onesies…you name it. Truthfully, I find it all a bit overwhelming. I know there are blogs and websites out there that give you guidelines, but it seems like there are so many things that one tiny person needs. So now I need your help.
What’s the one (or two or three) must-have baby items that you’d recommend to new parents? What brand of cloth diapers/swaddles/sleep sacks do you like best? And do we really need a humidifier or a video monitor or any other fancy gadget??
