Cape Relay Cliff Notes
| May 9, 2011 | Posted by Lauren under Running |
This weekend, I joined 11 other crazy runners to run 189 miles from Easton to Truro.

We ran.

We ate.

We guzzled coffee like it was going out of style.

I ran 18 miles over the course of 3 Legs, and hung out in a van for over 30 hours with 5 other awesome runners.

Together, we faced new relay challenges and somehow managed to trash the inside of an 11 passenger van within the first hour. Oh, and one of them punched me in the face. (Typical relay practice, I assure you).
While I can’t say that the Cape Relay was the best organized, most amazing relay I’ve ever done, I can say that I had a “wicked good time“…even in spite of the post-relay weekend adventures that included getting back to the state park where we had left our cars at 9:00 on Saturday night and realizing we were locked out, having a run in with a “lovely” Woonsocket woman who was apparently evading the police, and getting back to Rhode Island only to realize that my car and apartment keys were somewhere in the back of a van headed to New Hampshire.
I guess I just didn’t want the adventure to end…
60 hours, 189 miles run, and countless more driven later, I finally arrived home. Full recap to come soon. But for now, I still have an apartment to unpack.

This is the third recap that I’ve read of this and it sounds like SO much fun! I would love to do a big relay one day.

Laughing out loud. Saturday night was like a scene from a movie. You can’t make this stuff up. Oh, and we ran a relay! Yes, that was pretty awesome! Cape Relay may have had some glitches, but it was still smooth sailing for the Kenyan JV Team. I think we might have a chance at Varsity next year! Fun times!

haha we can only train hard and hope that next year we make the cut!
This just looks awesome. I’m gonna have to get in on this thing…

how fun!! After reading all the posts about the relay I have already been researching some upcoming ones!

Haha oh my goodness. You all had quite the adventure last weekend!! I can’t believe you got all the way back and realized you didn’t have your keys! Ugh! But it sounds like you made the best of it and embraced the craziness…hey, they’ll make for great memories! I’m starting to realize that relays are not about the running at all – they’re about everything else that goes on! Haha, just kidding
I’m sure you did some awesome running as well. Can’t wait to hear about it!
Hope you’re recovering today!!
Corey @ the runners cookie´s last post ..The little and big things
I know you were kidding but it’s actually really true! I love the running parts of the relay, but I think I love the other aspects of it (especially the team camaraderie part and all the other craziness that happens) even more!
Looks like a lot of fun!
Way to rock this! I absolutely love your blog and I’m so glad I stumbled onto it! I love your entire relay race running outfit–where are the I heart 26.2 top, shorts, and green compression(?) socks from? SO CUTE!!!!
Thank you!! I got that outfit from the Boston Marathon expo (I get suckered in easily, haha). But the 26.2 top is a bamboo cotton tee from Raw Threads (http://rawthreads.org/), the compression socks are from CEP (http://www.cepsocks.com) and I’m actually wearing a running skirt from Nike (this one: http://www.roadrunnersports.com/rrs/products/NKL1346/)
Congratulations! Looks like you had a great time. I love the pics and man, makes me miss my best girlfriends I ran with in high school and college. I am determined to try to find some new besties and running gals : )
I think that’s one reason why I like the relays so much – spending so much time running with people creates an instant connection. I really miss my running friends from high school and college, and this sort of fills that gap.
Sounds like another amazing experience. Did you do this and move in the same week? I don’t know what my excuse for dropping out now is haha..
Stephanie´s last post ..Saturday Splendor and its only 8-30
Yes – I ran a half marathon, moved, and then did the relay all within a week! It definitely wasn’t the smartest plan and I probably wouldn’t recommend it, but that’s just the way the timing worked out.
This race looks like so much fun!!! I widh there was something like this around my region because I’d definitely love to join in!
That relay sounds awesome. I have done a Ragnar Relay which is similar and exhausting. Sounds like you guys had a great team =)

Hey, awesome job. I have run a Ragnar Relay and know exactly how it can all go down. Looks like you guys had a blast =) -Jen

Awesome – I think these sound crazy fun!
I am cracking up about the lovely Woonsocket woman evading the policy – I can only imagine what that was like!!!? Oh, Rhodey.
Congrats! I’m reading your, Becky and Tina’s recaps all at once and I’m getting runner’s high through the computer screen. Glad you all made it out safe and alive! Can’t wait to hear about it over dinner again!
Erin @ Big Girl Feats´s last post ..Challenges
The only word I can use to describe it is unreal! We actually thought she needed help – she looked like she was running from something that terrified her. Turns out that something was the police.
That looks like so much fun! I have been wanting to do a relay for while now. Nice job!

Haha – I’m totally kidding!! Please don’t feel terrible about it – it made me look tough, you know?? And you can barely even tell today
What a blast! I have always wanted to do a relay.
Wow! It sounds like quite the adventure! But I suppose it wouldn’t be a relay run without some crazy adventures!:) Sorry that some of them involved getting locked out!

Oh man, after all that you didn’t have your keys on you. Oy.

Sounds like a great experience although badly organized. I hope to do something like that some day… if I continue running (my love/hate relationship with running is shaky at the moment
